Zhangjiakou was historically the main northern gate in the Great Wall for Europeans traveling along the Tea Road. The Zhangjiakou prefecture-level city has an area of 36,947 square kilometers (14,265 square miles) and a population of about 4.5 million. The Zhangjiakou urban area has a population of about half a million.
