Tower 1 Zhen Bei Tai

As reviewing last years photos I decided to place some here on a daily base.
I start with Yulin, Zen Bei Tai ( 38°20'22.79"N 109°43'45.41"E).
It is awfully reconstructed and gives the impression of a completely new building. I had hard to work to imagine how it was looking like in the Ming area.
It is called one of the five (three, seven?) wonders of the Great Wall.
Does anyone of you know how many those are and which are the other ones?

A view to the northwest:

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China

And here I am leaving to the east along the Great Wall:

The Great Wall of China

I have not heard of this before, but I would be very interested to know more about it. I would have to guess that Jiayuguan and Laolongtou would be included.

Sharing a old pictures of Zhenbeitai tower from chinese forum , it should be took in 1940 around and published in life magazine .

The house on top of tower was collapsed before 1911 , and it was restored in 1920 around, the time of recollapsed is unknown yet.

Wow, thanks a lot for showing. How much the building on top changes it's apperance! They do ugly rebuilding everywhere but not there where the exact shape is known and would add so much to the authenticity.

Impressive structures. I am surprised that they have not rebuilt the top house.

What is the history of this particular building? It is a rather large building.

Well, some aspects are already given here in this thread. The meaning of it's name is "the plattform suppressing the north". It is called one of the "five wonders of the Great Wall".

It once guarded a trading place below. Trading with "barbarians" was always a thing which was of great importance to both sides. "Proper China" accepted the neccessity for at least two reasons:
  • trade was an important way to pacify the northern enemy
  • there was one thing of enormous importance to China. China could not raise this in the amount needed and the hated northern neighbors had in abundance: horses

It is an impressive view to see this building, especially from the north. It is visible for many kilometers from the plain in the north.
