Default Jiayuguan video

The Great Wall of China
Jiayuguan
VCD
A nice video with a wide variety of still and motion photography including some excellent aerial photography. Information is basic but accurate. Purchased at the Jiayuguan museum. Probably made locally; no ISBN, ISRC, or UPC numbers.

A so-so video with a lot of shaky handheld shots and poor English translation and narration.

Default Dubious Great Wall Video

Hi everybody

Picked this ""Great Wall"" video (VCD Format), up from a gift shop in Tian'anmen Square, this afternoon.

Cost 15 yuan (no discount!!!)

ISRC CN-A03-03-308-00/V.J9
ISBN 7-7998-0809-9

Produced by CCTV as part of a New Tour China Collection.

Also in the series : Gu Gong, Tian Tan, Yi Hi Yuan, Shi Sang Ling.

Running time approx 45mins. Very limited GW content. Only in Chinese, no sub-titles. Mainly "artistic" shots of sunsets over GW and camels crossing a desert as well as some "battle scenes". In addition a CCTV presenter interviews a GW "expert".

GW content about 10 to 15mins actual. Good air shots of Simatai and the Western Han GW remains.

After watching it, I think I should have bought a KFC or a Big Mac instead.

Have attached a cameraphone shot of the cover for guidance on how to identify (and avoid) this GW Production.

regards

Michael

Default The Great Walk Of China

The Great Wall of China

DVD
52 Mins
No subtitles
English only
16:9 Widescreen

This is the video from Katie-Jane Cooper and Tarka L'Heriniere's walk along the Great Wall of China.

To correct it this is the viedeo of Katie-Jane Cooper's walk along the Great Wall. There is not a single photograph of Tarka, we never get any infromation about him.
It is a story about a "commercial model from Devon to foresake here makeup, acrylic nails and high heels" (sited from a website) somewhere out in rural China. In the whole video we do not get any information about the location she walks along, we do not get any insight to the local peculiarities of the GW, we see no reflection of both beauty or importance of the GW. There is an absolute lack of any interlectual deal with this subject.
To get to the second striking points: The video and the story told lack of credibility. On their website they claim "107 consecutive marathons", or "4500km in six month" (which was 25km/day).
According to what I got informed by others and to my own walking expieriences along the Wall I do not believe this is possible. Not even for well trained people (which Tarka obviously is). And as they say themselves, they carry a third of their body weight in their backpacks. They did their journey in the cold seasons so water was not the main problem. But to walk with about 20-30kg in the quoted rate - I just do not believe that. Maybe the Beijing/Hebei rock-and-brick guys could tell us what rate was possible in that regions but for most of Shanxi I can judge it could hardly be made.
There is also no information about how they made their orientation, not a single word about difficulties to find the Wall, not word about impasssable sections, not a word about supplies and and and.

So the video (and the whole story) stays what it is: No (absolutely no) information or reflection about one of the world's wonders and told in an implausible story.
Great Wall addicts although might want to buy a copy ...
