Re: Ancient commercial streets
I have seen Shanhaiguan (Sept 2008) in the state of beeing heavily repaired. It was as surrealistic setting, all the new built (in a kind of ancient style) shops along the abandoned streets. It was about impossible to find a single (!) restaurant inside the old city walls then. In the morning hundreds of school pupils passed through the city riding bicycles. There was not a single shop opened at that time but it was obvious that it would only take some weeks to get it a crowded place. While the rebuilt part of Shanhaiguan attrackted some tourists I enjoyed the market in the old, untouched and detoriated part. There are some very nice Siheyuan there and the people seem to live at their own pace.
