Map Great Wall Map Version 2

The Great Wall Forum is proud to announce version 2 of our comprehensive map of the Great Wall of China. This map is packaged as a kmz file for use with Google Earth.

The map is free, but you must comply with the license agreement to use it. Basically, the agreement contains these rules:
  • The map is only for personal, non-commercial use.
  • You may not copy, redistribute, or modify the map.
  • You are strongly urged to help protect and preserve the Great Wall.
The map is a community project. Users are encouraged to contribute additions, corrections, and suggestions. Special thanks to our members chinoook and Kim, who provided the majority of the data and did most of the work in creating this map.

Only forum members can download the map. Guests must register before downloading the attached map.

Please note that this map does not represent all of the data we have generated so far. Certain locations and categories have been omitted for various reasons. Please let us know if you are interested in the complete map.

The Great Wall of China map is a work in progress. This release is dated 2008/07/15. Please check back regularly for updates as we continually improve the map.

Important note: This thread has been replaced by Version 3 of the Great Wall Forum map of the Great Wall of China.

Thumbs up

I just wanted to say how impressive this map is. When I hiked from Jinshanling to Simatai, I felt like I had walked a very long distance. When I look at the part I hiked on the map, I feel like the tiny speck where I hiked is almost nothing compared with the length of the great wall.

When I look at the map it looks like it would be really easy to do that hike. But I know in real life it was actually very difficult and took a big effort.

It's amazing how extensive is the great wall. It goes back and forth and over and over. Sometimes I can't understand why it was designed that way. But if you pick any spot and zoom in close enough, you can actually see it. I don't know how you guys found all of that great wall on the map but I can tell it was a lot of work. Great job! Thank you.

Default Thanks and a question about green lines

This truly is fantastic. Amazing work and thanks to all who've been involved with creating it.

I do have one question though: what do the bright green lines denote, please? I know about the red, orange and yellow ones from the mini guide that appears during installation but couldn't find any reference to green.

Thanks again,

Mark

The bright green lines are from the "Overview" map and they are simply a map that shows the general path of the Great Wall. When you see red or orange lines in the same areas, the green line is not of much use, but in areas where there are no red or orange lines, the green line will give you an idea of the approximate location of the Wall.

For the next edition of the map, we have removed the green lines where we have a more positive location shown by red or orange lines.
