![]() Hello all, my name is Eddie and I'm from Singapore I joined to find out how to do the more interesting hikes along the GW Been on the GW 4 times now on 4 locations over the last 4 years ..... but still consider myself a novice/amature who just enjoys the outdoors Badaling which I did not enjoy because of the crowd Mutianyu which I somewhat enjoyed because of the smaller crowd Simatai which I really enjoyed because of the tough climb and even smaller crowds Jiankou (via the village that breeds rainbow trout) which I enjoy the most because we ran into less than 20 persons all day My one lesson from these 4 times on the GW........ go on a weekday during Spring or Autumn My longtime wish....... doing a multi-day camp/hike trip from Jingsanling to Simatai nice knowing all of you !! ![]()

Hello, Eddie! Welcome to the Great Wall Forum!
Thanks for posting those great Jiankou photos. That's a long hike up to the Wall on the south side, isn't it? Enjoy your time here and feel free to ask questions or make comments!

Compare the photo above to the one below, which is from May of 2004. You can see that some mild restoration work has been done on the lowest (Jiankou) section of the Jiankou Great Wall. It's clearly visible on Google Earth at 40°27'20"N 116°31'32"E.

Yes there has been 'some' restoration done on the Jiankou section of the wall....... its a VERY VERY crude type of restoration where they just fill the top layer with some kind of cement or concrete to keep in place all the loose bricks and rocks.... it looked almost impossible to climb without risking my life until I looked closely and realized what they did to keep bricks and rocks in place.....
Still many parts, I was so scared that we had go climb up/down on all 4's (feet+hands)..... let me see if I have any pics to show what I mean ....., oh !! and I enjoy the relaxing smoke of a pipe or a cigar too while taking in great views (not cigarettes) ! Yes Bryan, that hike up (2.5hrs) and then back down( 3+hrs) getting to and from that section of the wall ...... tough !! The village that farms rainbow trout...... it has great BBQ fish !
