Yes, it's very possible. I would say that although the Wall is in worse condition than most parts of Jiankou, it's less dangerous.

If by taxi, I would have them drop me at Lianhuachi. Once you get to Mutianyu, it's easy to find return transportation.
On the other hand, you could start at Mutianyu, and if the going gets too rough or you reach a difficult spot (e.g. very thick brush that you don't want to fight your way through) then you could turn around. The bus that goes between Xizhazi and Huairou stops at Lianhuachi, so that is an option for you too.
