I've been reading this thread with interest. The logic of the contributors makes sense to me. But, unfortunately, I haven't yet had anything meaningful to add.

Inside the tunnel are many rooms such a prison;meeting room; training room and wells. In times of war, comes in handy.
According to Sun Tzu Art of Warfare, surprise is a key element. As the enemy shoud not have been aware of this secret installation, they would be ambushed I think and if the Ming soldiers were surrounded, they would be able to escape and call for help via the tunnel.

The google translation is not very good so maybe some of our Chinese members can help?

I had searched there, no information at all , and i don't expect to get any information there either .
Fortunately, with you and Ken information , i made a rough picture including fortress, tunnel and great wall in Jiumenkou .

Red line: path of Great wall
white line: path of wall of fortresses
brown line: tunnel path

The total length of brown line is 1.2Km around, almose same as web information in chinese, and as Ken' tunnel map show , there were several rooms in this tunnel .

Would you mind asking at the Chinese forum?

I still find it very hard to believe that this is a Ming construction related to the Great Wall so any information from the Chinese forum would be highly appreciated.

It would have been easier to build one hundred additional defensive walls here instead of one tunnel and probably more effective, so a tunnel does not make much sense in my opinion.

Probably part of this thread should be moved to Jiumenkou.

I had posted same GE map i madein chinese forum last night , only one guy raise question about the position of tunnel path i drawed until now.
Due to all information in Chinese web said this tunnel was built by general Xu Da (徐达) of Ming ( this general was mentioned on topic Taolinkou of this forum of link Taolinkou before ),i thought the time of construction shoule be convinced.
