Jinshanling advice

Me and a friend are planning to visit Jinshanling next month and hope to do the walk from Jinshanling to Simatai. I just wanted some general advice on how to do it. We were thinking of arriving at jinshanling to walk the wall a bit and stay overnight at a nearby hotel... then the next day early in the morning do the trek from Jinshanling to Simatai (and maybe walk along Simatai for a few hours too). Is there any general advice about what to bring, which parts to visit during which days, best places to get excellent photographs, parts to avoid, etc... also how good is the transport back into Beijing from Simatai?

Last year, I arrived at Jinshanling from Gubekou, spent one day at Jinshanling, spent the night at the Jinshanling Hotel, and then continued to Simatai the next morning. See Jinshanling Great Wall review for details.
