Isn't the D90 the better Camera? Smaller, lighter and better at high noise? I do not see any relevant advantages of the D300. Or am I wrong?

Yes, the D90 is smaller compared to D300 and some D90 borough some of the features from D300. The D300 body is made of metal while the D90 body is made of plastic, so in theory the D300 should be more suitable for a GW trip and more weather resistant, but I never had any problems with the plastic body of the D80. It is true that the D90 produce better quality at very high iso, but I seldom shoot at more than iso 400 anyway.

I'm not very satisfied with the metering of the D80 (not D90), and D300 is far more better and also seems to be better than the D90.

I guess it all comes down to how much you are willing to pay, the quality you demand and how heavy load you are willing to carry.

I would choose the D300 over the D90, but only because I already have the D80.

It is always a quandry for me when travelling to China. What camera do you want to lug around for 2 weeks?

When I bring small format cameras I am always dissatisfied with the the quality and range of light issues but I never complain about carrying it. When I bring a medium format camera I like the pictures more but complain about the bulk. I have compromised on bulk, weight and cost for moderate quality. I use a FUJI S5100. It has a big enough lens to do the job and shoots up to 4 meg pictures.

If I frame something on the wall I might want more but most of the time this camera is enough to take on the task. And again...It's lightweight. Ahhhh...

That being said I will evenually buy a Nikon D series or Cannon next time around. 25 -85 mm lens should do it for range.

Default Lumix DMC-ZS7

Being a fan of ultralight hiking, I have found a very intriguing camera, the Lumix DMC-ZS7 (or DMC-TZ10 outside the USA). Here are some of the basics:
  • 25-300mm Leica zoom lens
  • Automatic or manual exposure
  • GPS receiver will geotag images, locate POIs, and set clock
  • Highly acclaimed optical image stabilization
  • Small and lightweight
  • Fast focus and acquisition
  • High-definition video, Dolby stereo sound
  • SDXC support
Battery life, image quality, price, and release date remain to be seen.

The new Samsung EX-1 (or its other name, the TL500 in the US) is a great potential with very nice lens and build quality. Colors and functions are great too .....

The EX1 looks like a really nice camera and your pics are very good.

It's great to see companies making small cameras with high quality sensors and fast lenses instead of trying to out-spec each other with tons of megapixels and super zoom lenses.

Here is another review.
