The Great Wall of China
Now that is a painful sight.

The two photographs are from the Ming GW near the Yellow river and the other one I think is Xiakou if I remember correctly.

I hear you Bryan, but i would like to consider this for a moment. I have mixed emotions about even considering this but...

Could you imagine a barrier or two 5500 miles long existing in the US or Europe? Imagine how many sections would have been deconstructed or even relocated in western countries. It is amazing as much of it has survived as it has.

Do the people of this region deserve or need roads to accommodate their "progress" in society? I don't know. I am not sure progress is a good thing in this case. But you have to ask yourself... How would you circumvent this wall without some form of destruction? Maybe a long tunnel that did not obscure the vista? Again I have mixed emotions about considering this but the situation would potentially be ten times as sever in western regions. Americans can't keep a football stadium for more than 20 years.

*note a football is that funny shaped non spherical ball.

Actually there is such a thing, the Limes. Survived has the Limes Germanicus, Hadrian's and Antonine's Wall and sections of other walls. They all sum up in a total length that well compares with one of the major Great Walls of China.

Due to the material it was built with there is not much preserved but today it is treated as a national treasure, it is a part of the World Heritage. No destruction of it would be acceptable by today.
