I have made a new banner today based on some of the earlier input.

I like to see the banners changing.

Maybe I will keep changing them until something seems right. Looking for more simplicity, here's today's:

I like it too but I thought it looked a little bit too monochrome, so I made this one:

The Great Wall of China

I used a different pattern, and also slightly changed the orientation of the drop shadow.

That looks very nice, but it doesn't look like the Great Wall. Maybe the first one is a bit monochrome, but so is the Great Wall. I don't remember seeing that many red bricks at the wall

Agreed, the red was a bit too much, kind of like some of the over-restored Great Wall sites...

This is the kind of color I am after. The photo is from Jinshanling.

I think the first one represent the Great Wall very well.

Do you think it goes well with the overall look of the page?

Yes, I think it looks very nice. The design of the site is very simple, so a simple banner goes well with overall look.

Personally I would prefer some kind of picture like my own blog:

The Great Wall of China

But it seems some of the other comments demand a more simple design, so the one you have now looks very nice.
