Kim,

I get those coordiates from this thread and plot on the map.
You may also find we have more points on the north of Beijing and Hebei.
and less on the west section of great wall.

Today I am reviewing those points with google earth.
Generally, you points are good quality, they can be found or very near on the great wall location with google earth.
The previous points from Greatwall administrator, is less presice presented.
Eg. 37°56'N 102°38'E, ( wuwei, I think it was a section, but it's a mall city now )
But those points is more important to give the overview for great wall.

So far data is less verified on quality and quanitity for an scientific analisys.
Or the great wall is disappearing ?

If those points don't have without second digital, it's difficult to be proved on google earth.
E.g.
Lengkou – 40°10'0"N 118°50'0"E
Dongxinzhuang – 40°11'N 118°49'E

How many proved point we have ?
Or how physical travel experience has more evidence beyond google earth ?

I've passed Lengkou a few times by car and I think this is a more precise position:

40°10'49.97"N 118°49'50.83"E

Note that many places don't have high resolution GE images so some of the coordinates is the nearest city.

So far I've been to about 15 places in Hebei (Tangshan and Qinhuangdao) plus a few other places in Beijing, Liaoning and Shanxi and other members have big experience in Beijing and the western part of China, so I think we are very well covered but I'm not sure exactly how many proven points we have.

I think the remaining length of Great Wall is about from 667km to 2015 km.
They are distributed mostly on the east sections at north of Beijing.
In the Ming devoted considerable resources to repair and reinforce the walls.
Sections near the Ming capital of Beijing were especially strong.

What is your comments ?

I think that on my walk in the far west I had about 80% wall coverage on 1400 km ....
It was mainly Ming wall, about 100km were clearly Han.

I don't know the exact length (probably nobody does) but that seems like a very low estimate.

The wall in Beijing and Hebei is very well preserved many places and alone in these two provinces the total length is probably more than 2000 km. Then comes all the other provinces and different dynasties.

It depends on how many initial data we have, so far we have 92. So the conclusion is about 650 -2000 km. with 80% -90% confidence interval.
If we have more data E.g. over 300, The precision goes better.

However, it's not meanless. many chinese are still regarding the Great wall is more than 6000 km from their historical textbook. Which is not realistic.

I think too few travelling man on location to understand Great wall like this forum.

Most Chinese (and others) think of Badaling when they hear about the Great Wall and many of them wouldn't know it, even if the Great Wall is located in their backyard.

I know that's putting it on the edge but you will probably see the same thing in many other countries. Of cause a lot of Chinese people is interested in the Great Wall and have great knowledge.

I tried to explain to a chinese friend that the wall continue into Liaoning and all the way to North Korea, but he didn't believe me. It's also very difficult to explain that the wall is more than 10,000 Li long. So there's a lot of old myths that still prevail even today.

The Great Wall of China

I asked the children that flew a kite, what structure they are standing on. They did not know. They told me: The Great Wall is at Jiayuguan.

You guys know better ...

Unbelievable. I don't know if that's funny or sad. I often wonder how people can live in Beijing for their entire lives and never visit the Great Wall. Or only go to Badaling, which is just about the same as never going.
