Sorry you had this lousy experience but glad you made the best of it. And thanks for sharing this warning.

By the way, clicking the link you provided produced a warning in Chrome: This site contains malware. Doesn't that figure?

Good on you for standing up for yourself in the end. Thankfully the shop owner helped you out, as would most Chinese people have done. No wonder some visitors go home from here with terrible experiences.

Maybe we need a sticky on the forum for people who just want to visit the wall for sightseeing.

I mean, Badaling is a 6 yuan, 60-ish minute train ride from Xizhimen. Not a soul on Earth needs a guide for Badaling.

Mutianyu is also pretty easy to visit, especially in season when there's a direct (if slow) public bus.

By next year the Ming Tombs will have a subway station so hopefully that will put a lot of scammers out of business too.

Makes you really feel sorry for the country bumpkins who probably go home saying "oh, lucky we didn't get into the Ming Tombs, they were haunted".

Sad that a few people feel the need to fleece the vulnerable to make a buck. Such a shame!
If you're tired of the Great Wall, you're tired of life.
