Default Dongjiakou

An unusually clear day at the East Hebei Great Wall - a perfect day to try the newly bought boots for the Hebei hike in September.

Another great Eastern Hebei view. In the front of the picture is Chengziyuguan and in the background the wall at Banchangyu.

The Great Wall of China

A closer look at the Banchangyu Great Wall.

Dongjiakou tower. Just right of the tower is Chengziyu, further right is Pingdingyu. In the background Banchangyu, and in the left side of the picture is part of the Yiyuankou section.

The Great Wall of China

Most of the Dongjiakou wall is made of stone, but short sections is made of brick. There even seem to be some early stone towers along the wall.

The Great Wall of China

Very well preserved tower.

Brick wall.

The Great Wall of China

A rear gate on the enemy side of the wall. According to some info this was for the soldiers to engage an attacking enemy, however the mountain is very steep here so that seems unlikely.

The Great Wall of China

There's a lot of beautiful and well preserved stone carvings in this area.

The Great Wall of China

Well preserved house on top of watchtower.

The Great Wall of China

Beautiful blue sky.

Yes, as PWCCA said, stunning! Clear weather makes a big difference. This is an amazing location for both the close-up condition of the Great Wall and the distant views of it are impressive. To me, this is the epitome of the real Great Wall.

Most of these photos would make great wallpaper if they were larger.

Thanks for sharing these images.

Fantastic photos Kim. How easy is it to reach this section from Beijing by public transport?

Thanks. Let me know if you would like any of them in bigger size. I have most of them in 4288x2848.

I have my own car, so I really don't know much about public transport in this area. I guess you would have to take a train or bus to Qinhuangdao. Then get on a bus towards Qinglong and get of a few kilometres before Yiyuankou and try to find a small bus to Yiyuankou.

It's probably about 40 kilometres from Qinhuangdao to Dongjiakou, so it would be easier to try and find a taxi driver that will take you there and wait to take you back to Qinhuangdao.

Thanks!! If you don't mind, pick one or two of your favorites. I will then have some great new wallpaper. If you want a hint, try the first and last ones. Attach them to a post or PM them to me at your convenience.

Okay, I will post them later. The last photo is shot with my D80 so that is only 3872x2592. That's a good example of how useful it is to carry a wide angle lens, since this shot would be impossible with my normal 18-135 lens. To avoid changing the lens and getting in a lot of dust I carry both a D300s and D80, and keep the wide angle lens on the D80
