Mutianyu to Jiankou Juyongguan to Badaling Gubeikou to Simatai Simatai to Jinshanling For example, I know it takes four hours trekking from Simatai to Jinshanling, am I right? And plz help me if you have once visited this route, for I am planning a trekking route and would like to make a compare. Thank you!

Mutianyu to Jiankou: 4 hours walking on the Wall from Mutianyu to Zhengbeilou
Juyongguan to Badaling: 20 to 30 minutes driving on Badaling expressway, depending on traffic Gubeikou to Simatai: 9 hours for me (moderate pace) Simatai to Jinshanling: 3 to 5 hours walking on the Wall, depending on where you exit the Wall at Jinshanling

hello, I'm a newbie to the forum. I will be hiking Mutinuyu to Jiankou starting next friday, sept5-6th, and staying the night just off the jiankou area. I will be traveling with one active hiking female, and one not so active american female. My question is can anyone tell me what percentage of this hike is rough compared to not so rough? I am just wanting to mentally prepare them for the hike and what to expect. second question is: are there signs along the jiankou area to tell us where to get off to go to our hostel or should i get a map somehwhere? thanks for any advice. Jeff

Once you reach the end of the restored Mutianyu section, at the top of a 454-step incline, it's a scramble all the way to Jiankou. There are loose and damaged surfaces and lots of plant growth on the Wall. It's not a good choice for someone without this type of hiking experience. There are some photos of these places in our Jiankou (Zhengbeilou) and Mutianyu (Niujiaobian) forums to give you an idea of what it's like. You will exit the Wall at Zhengbeilou and head down to Xizhazi 2 dui and from there to your hostel, which I guess is in Xizhazi 5, like the Zhao hostel. There are no signs and the path is not too obvious. But once you go through the bottom of Zhengbeilou, on the right side there is a pile of bricks next to the wall right where the wall meets the tower. You can climb down these and then take the path down the mountain. The path is shown on our Beijing area Great Wall map. Ideally you could load these onto a GPS receiver to follow the path.

Bryan, thank you so much for the reply. this info is helpful. unfortunately, I don't have a GPS, only an interpreter to travel with me so i'm wondering the best "map" i can either buy or print out that would just show the area i am hiking so we don't get lost. Suggestions?
