The Great Wall of China

This is the story written by Polly Greeks, who accompanied Nathan Gray for some 100 Miles along the Great Wall around Beijing. It gives some insight to the problems a Great-Wall-walker encounters and some insight in her relationsship to Nathan. I am not sure wethere he is happy about this book ...
Worth reading? Not if you expect some new issues about the Great Wall. I can recommend it for recreational reading. Don't expect to much and you will probably be amused and will get some impressions of the Great Wall.

The Great Wall of China

Whispers from the Wall
Great Wall Folktales
Told Across the Centuries

By Zhang Heshan
China Intercontinental Press
English and Chinese
ISBN: 978-7-5085-1528-1
RMB 49,00

This is really an interesting book. The author is a descendant of the peasant soldiers who were forced to move to the Great Wall to help to build an to maintain it. In some section each beacon tower up to today is named after the family who was running it.
The author has collected folktales of the section he lives at (Chengziyu).
The tales might not be 100% the historic truth but will often contain at least some of it.

The english text was edited by William Lindesay who also wrote the foreword. 'International Friends of the Great Wall' has raised some funds to support local peasants of Chengziyu who contribute to the preservation of 'their' GW.

One day before I bought this book at Wangfujing International Book Store Mr. Lindesay had been there together with one of his sons. He is currently working on a book about Qin Shi Huang.
