Another note: it would be great to have a few lines of annotations about these works, just to make informed choices in digging out some of them, or ordering them from Beijing.
I do not think the new edition contains any more material than the early one, but it does contain some information on the Great Wall. You can look at the Preview to see what's contained in the new edition.

I agree about the annotations. Others that have posted books have been better about that than I. Over time I will go back and add notes or short reviews to my book posts.

I wonder, have any books been written specifically for hikers who want to explore the great wall with information about all hike-able sections, information about individual elements such as towers and such, paths, dangers, and any other advice? Basically a lot of what is already posted in this forum condensed into one book.

If there were a good book that I could recommend, I would, but I do not know of one in English. Polly Greeks talks about a Chinese one in her book.

I found a really nice book last week in Wangfujing Bookstore. They only had one copy, but I also found it a few places on the internet by seaching the ISBN no.

The Great Wall of China

The book comes with a nicely decorated cardbord box.

The Great Wall of China

The book itself has a good quality cover but without much information.

The Great Wall of China

It is one of the most interesting Great Wall books I've seen so far - unfortunately all the text is in Chinese.

The Great Wall of China

The book contains maps and photos of several different dynasties with short descriptions of the wall.

The Great Wall of China

Different watch towers:

The Great Wall of China

Shanhaiguan Pass:

The Great Wall of China

With a price tag of 580 RMB it is one of the more expensive books, but the excellent photos and details are well worth it.

ISBN: 978-7-80244-333-4

Published: September 2008

Price: 580 RMB (85 USD)

Pages: 257

The Great Wall of China

The Corridor West of the Yellow River
A Glimpse of the Historc Route and Qilian Mountain

330 p.
86 RMB

It took a long time to get this book transferred to Europe.

Hexi Zhoulang by my friend Chen Huai.

Exceptional photographs, very sensitive narration, this is a marvellous book. Only to have you prepared: The print quality is not as high as conent or the photographic material.
The material of Chen Huai's former book about the Shandan Great Wall is contained in this book.
The book is not only about the Great Wall but both Ming and Han Dynasty Great Wall are well covered. Lots of the locations have not been photographed before.

This book can be obtained in the west by me, I have a couple of copies here and will get delivered more on a regular base. Just send me a private message and I will get it sent to you. (Kim and GWF: Your copies are on their way).

Today I got a copy of the following book in a local(!) store here in Germany:

Luo Zhewen, Shen Baichang, Zhang Xiaoyu
Spanning The Ages - China's Immortal Dragon
China Architecture and Building Press 1994
ISBN 7-112-02262-2

The Great Wall of China

This is an incredible good book. Superior photographs of many walls (not only Ming). Most of the items I have not seen before. English text with some mistakes, maybe due to translation. Text quality should be very high and reliable (the authors!).

The Great Wall of China

I bought a copy of this incredible good book at Wangfujing Book Store.
Two remarks to Kim's review:

- The book is much cheaper when bought online. The price is rabated then by 20%. I convinced the staff at the Wangfujing Book Store to sell me the book at the internet price. It took some minutes for them to decide but I succeeded.

- The book contains really good photographs, some are from our member CH312 (Chen Huai).
