According to the latest news:

Quote:
Latest survey by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage shows that there are 526.65467 kilometers of the Great Wall in Beijing.
According to the news more than half have been renovated or rebuilt:

Quote:
Of the nearly 527 km of Great Wall, about 388 km have been renovated or rebuilt, according to the survey.
Doesn't that sound a bit exaggerated?

In another article:

Quote:
On the same day, the municipal bureau of cultural relics in Shanxi announced that there are 896.53 km of the Great Wall in the province, and 631.12 km of those have been rebuilt.

Data released by the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping in April showed the total length of the Great Wall is 8858.88 km, nearly 71 percent of which have been rebuilt.
I'm not sure what they mean by rebuilt but 71 % is a lot!

Only possible interpretation: rebuilt in Ming times. Today rebuilt wall should not exagerate 5% in the Beijing area.

Agreed, but that is not the way it is expressed in the article. It mention wall build in the Ming dynasty not rebuilt.

Like chinoook said. No way more than a few percent of the Great Wall in any province has been rebuilt since the Ming Dynasty. I think the figure of 40 km is reasonably accurate.

But as far as I know the Ming rebuilt their own wall at some section several times.

Yes, that is true. Let us conclude that the text in the article lacks a bit further explanation.

A guy in Chinese GW forum raised a question yesterday , it is why the length of great wall in Beijing districts provided by Beijing Municipal Administration was accurrate until five digits after decimal point while only two digits provided by municipal bureau of cultural relics of other provinces even state .

Yes, I noticed that too, and I had to laugh to myself. Some people just don't understand the concept of significant digits and implied accuracy. The figure of 526.65467 km means the figure is accurate to the centimeter. Anyone who is familiar with the Great Wall knows that is ridiculous.

What, you didn't notice the scientist with there extremely accurate surveillance equipment last year

Totally ridiculous. Some other articles just say 527 km, which seems just as good and more reliable.

I walked past this some days ago, and honestly didn't even take it seriously. It looked like a joke. Sad to see now that it in fact _was_ the GW.
